April Showers Bring May Flowers: Fun Ways To Spend a Rainy Day With Your Kids!

Rainy days don’t have to be sad or boring…they can be fun and inspiring! Check out the top five ways to spend a rainy day with your children! Remember, April showers bring May flowers. It will be summer soon enough, so enjoy those rainy days!

Make an indoor obstacle course or fort!
Your kids will love doing this with you…and it creates hours of fun! Use pillows, blankets, chairs, tables and anything else that creates a course for your kids to crawl in, around and through. End your obstacle course with a homemade fort. The fort is a great place to have an afternoon snack!

Bake some cookies or a cake!
Children love helping in the kitchen, so take the time on a rainy day to make an edible masterpiece! Making cookies, cakes or cupcakes is a great way to teach children about cooking and safety in the kitchen, all the while having fun. Pure and Honest Kids has several cookie and cupcake sets that would be perfect for some rainy day fun! Check them out here.

Crafts, crafts and more crafts!
Rainy days are a perfect time to pull out your craft box. If you don’t have a craft box, then it’s time to make one. Stock it full of glitter, glue, markers, paper bags and paper plates, foam shapes, string…anything a child can use to make a work of art. If you reserve the craft box for rainy days only, it will make it that much more special!

Movie day!
Allow your kids to choose a special movie to watch on a rainy day. Make sure to pop some popcorn, dim the lights and cuddle up under a blanket together! Watching a movie as a family on a rainy day can be a lot of fun, especially if it is something you don’t do often!

Splish splash!
If you are brave enough, and the weather elements are not too precarious, take your children outside to enjoy splashing in the puddles! Don’t forget to check out Pure and Honest Kid’s awesome selection of raingear! From rain boots to raincoats and umbrellas, your little boy or girl will be the most stylish kid on the block on rainy days (and well protected from the elements.)

We hope the next rainy day at your house is fun and enjoyable!

Babymoons!

Babymoons are all the rage right now! What is a babymoon, you ask? A babymoon is a vacation taken by a couple that is expecting a baby in order to allow the couple to enjoy a final trip together before the many sleepless nights that usually accompany a newborn baby.

Parents-to-be or couples that are trying to get pregnant are now flocking to resorts, beaches and getaway spots for a “one last trip” before their family of two becomes three!

Here are some excellent reasons for you to consider a babymoon!

----- A babymoon offers the mom and dad-to-be some rest, relaxation and pampering. This is an excellent time before the baby comes to enjoy sleeping in, pampering yourself with spa treatments, lounging by the pool, or reading a book on the beach. Pretty soon, your vacations will be action packed with feeding and caring for a baby, and eventually, chasing a toddler around. So enjoy the calm and serenity while you can!

----- A babymoon is an excellent way to enjoy one-on-one time with your significant other before your family expands. Use your babymoon as a time to talk to your spouse about apprehensions, excitement and anxieties you both have about becoming parents. Talking to one another will only help you feel closer. But don’t make it all about baby! Be sure your time is also spent on laughing and enjoying each other’s company! Make periods of time where there is no “baby talk” allowed.

----- A babymoon is also your chance to take a break from all the planning that comes when you are expecting a baby! Stop all the talk about registering, picking out nursery furniture, deciding on names, and cleaning out your house to make room for one more…and just enjoy yourselves. No planning allowed on your babymoon!

----- Many travel companies now specialize in babymoon packages, so do your research and you may be able to find an incredible deal! Going someplace you have never been or back to an old favorite getaway spot can rejuvenate you during the last few months of your pregnancy…so start looking for babymoon deals now!

From all of us at Pure and Honest Kids, Happy Babymoon!

How To Prepare Your Kids For A New Pet

Getting a new puppy or cat can be such an exciting time in the life of your children. But before the new member of the family comes home, there are ways to prepare for kids for the adorable ball of fluff that will soon invade your house!

It is important for your children to know how to interact with a new pet, and you must set guidelines as to what is acceptable and what is not. Of course, this is all based on the age of your children, so decide before your new pet comes home what acceptable behavior towards your new pet is and what is not acceptable.

By preparing for your new pet with your children ahead of time, it will ensure that your kids and your cat or dog will be buddies rather than afraid of one another. Check out the tips below on how to welcome your new pet home!

----- Let your child practice petting before your puppy or kitten comes home. You can practice on a stuffed animal or on a well behaved, adult pet that belongs to your friends or family. Show them how to be gentle and where to pet the animal (preferably not in the face!)
Show your children how to lift and hold a puppy or kitten with care (again, with a stuffed animal). Teach them not to squeeze too hard when lifting the animal.
----- Pet-proof the house together. This will teach your children about all the trouble dogs and cats can get into, and will also show them how to keep their new pet out of danger. While you are pet-proofing the house, you can discuss with your children what you want and don’t want your new animal to be allowed to do (i.e. puppy is not allowed on the couch or kitty cat is now allowed in the nursery.)
----- Take your new pet to the veterinary together. Have the vet discuss with your child ways to love and care for a pet. Sometimes it is helpful to have an “expert” teach your children ways to care for your new animal.
----- Discuss with your children up front what they will be responsible for in regards to the new pet. For example, if you want your kids to feed and water your new pet, demonstrate how much food and water the animal should get at each feeding. Or if you want you children to be responsible for taking a new puppy outside to go to the bathroom, show them where in the yard you would ideally like the puppy to use the bathroom (i.e. a natural area, etc.) Be as specific with your children as possible when setting up pet responsibilities.
----- If this is a first pet for your children, check out books in the library discussing pets and how to care for them. Reading books with your kids on the subject is an excellent way to prepare your family for the arrival of a new puppy or cat.

Enjoy your new pet from Pure and Honest Kids!

Celebrate Earth Day with your Kids

Earth Day, celebrated April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It is a great time to learn about our planet and how we can take better care of it. Here are some ways you can celebrate Earth Day with your kids this year!

----- Have a picnic and use only locally grown food. This is a great way to teach your kids that produce from local farms and vendors is a “green” way of buying groceries and a fantastic time to introduce your little ones to a local farmer’s market. Look for organic foods while shopping. On your picnic, also be sure to use reusable dinnerware and plates, or paper plates made from recycled products.

----- Take a family bike ride to somewhere you would normally drive. If there is a nearby store or park that you would usually hop in your car to go to, instead ride your bikes to promote gas conservation and pollution reduction. This is a great way to enjoy a family activity together, all the while being environmentally friendly.

----- Plant your own garden! There has never been a better time to plant your own vegetables, due to the economy and the environment, so take the initiative on Earth Day and plant some of your favorite things to eat. Ask people at your local plant nursery for advice on what will grow best in your hometown.

----- Buy organic clothing and products on Earth Day and teach your child about the importance of “going green” when it comes to clothes and other gear. Many stores have “green” clothing items and other products, so when you can buy green, it is a great way to teach your children how to make environmentally sound choices.

Stretch Marks---How to Prevent Them During Pregnancy

Stretch marks. Nobody wants them. You don’t know for sure until you are in the late stages or pregnancy and post pregnancy if you are going to be one of the unlucky ones that get stretch marks. Statistics show that more than half of all pregnant women develop stretch marks during pregnancy…some worse than others.

Research shows that stretch marks are largely genetic (meaning you are pre-disposed to have them if your mother or sister got them), but there are some things you can do to try to prevent them, or at least minimize the scarring.

1. Eat healthy, balanced meals. Don’t overeat. Keeping your weight gain between the recommended 25-35 pounds for an average sized pregnant woman will help you prevent your skin from stretching too much or too fast. A controlled and steady weight gain will let your skin stretch at a steady rate, thus making stretch marks less likely than if you gained a lot of weight all at once.

2. Drink plenty of water. Keeping your skin hydrated will keep it healthy during the stretching that inevitably comes with pregnancy.

3. Keep your skin moisturized beginning in the first trimester (start in the second trimester at the very latest) and keep up your moisturizing through post pregnancy as your skin continues to stretch and resort back to your pre-pregnancy size. These moisturizers will help keep your skin supple. There are many oils and creams on the market to choose from to help keep your stomach moisturized. Pure and Honest Kids has a few stretch mark products below for you to check out!

Remember that it is also important to take care of yourself during the postpartum period. The dramatic weight loss makes your skin susceptible to stretch marks once again.

Happy pregnancy from Pure and Honest Kids!
