How To Run Errands With Your Kids in Tow

Running errands with kids is hard work…you never know how many errands you’ll actually accomplish between potty breaks, sibling fights, short attention spans and hungry bellies!

Here are some tips on how to more efficiently run errands when your children are accompanying you.

Access your kids’ moods before walking out the door.
If your children seem to be in a happy, content mood, it might be a good time to try to accomplish some tasks. If your children are sleepy, hungry, or just plain grumpy, wait until a more conducive time to run errands.

Allot enough time to get the important tasks completed.
Remember that each stop will require time to get your kids in and out of the car, and into strollers or shopping carts. Also include time for potty breaks and snacks. Every errand will inevitably take a little longer than you anticipated, so build extra time into your schedule. Here is a little tip that is a big time-saver…park near the shopping cart corral. It is much less tiring and quicker to put your baby or child in the shopping cart in the parking lot than it is to carry your child across the parking lot and do it inside the store.

Don’t interrupt naptime, even if you are on a roll with getting errands checked off your list.
Naptimes often come at the most inconvenient times of day, but allowing your child to get the rest they need will make for a happier, more easy-going child. The last thing you want is your child to have a meltdown in the middle of a store because he or she is overtired.

Keep a bag of snacks and juice boxes in your car for “in case of emergency.”
Anticipating the needs of your children will help your errand-running go more smoothly. Having snacks and drinks readily available will curb meltdowns in public.

Bring toys and games in the car to keep boredom at bay.
Stickers, books and even a movie in the car are great ways to keep your kids entertained as you drive them across town for errands. Children can get very antsy sitting in a car for any length of time so having fun things for them to do in the car will stretch out your errand time.

So you are thinking about cloth diapering and you have no idea where to start. I have been there. I've logged hundreds of hours researching cloth diapers and I believe I can make your life a lot simpler by offering you a little bit of "been there, done that" advice. So, sit back and let me help you dive into the secret world of cloth diapers.

First, the thing you need to decide for yourself is this: Am I cloth diapering to save money, save the environment, or a combination? You can save a lot of money by cloth diapering; you can also spend a lot depending on the types of diapers you choose. Here is a run down of the different cloth mamas out there. You may start out using cloth just to reduce your environmental impact, but if you are like me, you will end a Fluff Addict.

Where do you look for information on cloth diapering when there are thousands of sites with the purpose of educating you? Here are the websites I found most helpful during my pregnancy.

This website is best known for their extensive library of reviews of practically every diaper out there, including WAHM diapers (made by Work at Home Moms), accessories like pail liners and wet bags, and other cloth related items. They also have forums for more research or to ask questions on. Check out the “How To” page on this site, as it will help you understand how many diapers you will need to begin with.

I found this to me be favorite site, both when first learning and now for information and shopping. There are forums for everything. You can ask questions on the Diaper Q&A Forum to very experienced moms, buy used diapers on their FSOT (For Sale or Trade) section, or talk on unrelated matters.

Did you even realize that washing cloth diapers is not like tossing your diapers in a washer and pouring your favorite detergent in? Neither did I. Thankfully, I did my research before I ever made that mistake! This site has a handy chart of detergents to use on your diapers. It also all depends on the type of water you have. Remember, less is more. Usually half of the suggested amount or less will work to wash your diapers. Never use the full amount of detergent, ever!

So you are trying to convince your husband that cloth really can save you money but when he saw the $18.00 diaper you wanted to buy, he laughed you out of the room. Been there. Here is an excellent cost comparison chart. They compare the cheapos like prefolds, all the way up to the Cadillac diapers like All in Ones. Also, I wrote a post called “How to Get Your Husband to Cloth Diaper, in case you need some pointers.
While looking at these sites did you become overwhelmed with the lingo? AIO, OS, AI2, DSQ, NIP, EUC, FFS, FL, EBF, ISO, IHA, OBV, PUL, etc? If you are diving into cloth you will need this dictionary of the terms used on diapering websites.

Now, you have decided you absolutely want to use cloth but you don't know which type of diaper is best for your family? I wish I had followed my own advice on this one. Try out everything. Do the research. You may think you are going to love the convenience of an All in One diaper. Set it and forget it. But once you start using them you find they are taking forever to dry. Or, you would like more absorbency. Here is my best advice: Buy used. Go to the FSOT forum on diaperswappers.com and buy a few pre-folds and a cover, or two. Buy a pocket diaper like a Bumgenius One Size Pocket. Get an All in One Diaper, a fitted like Thirsties Fab Fitted, or get fancy and try an All in Two like a Piddle Poddles. You may find that you love one type, or love the variety. I personally like to mix it up depending on the situation. I like going coverless at home using Bamboo Prefolds; this helps me know when my son has wet. Out and about I prefer my Bum Genius AIO Organics. Later, your tastes may change as the eliminations of your child change.

If you are reading this article while pregnant you are in the best possible position. Beginning cloth diapering takes a large initial investment. The cost is worth it; you pay upfront but never have to spend money on buying disposables every week. I began buying my diapers a few at a time, whenever there was a good sale. If you spend what disposables would cost in a week, over time you will have a sizable stash.

Don't worry if you already have a child, these tips are for everyone. No matter what age your child is, you can start cloth diapering. You may face a different set of challenges, such as sticky or solid poop, but it can certainly be done. There are so many options available that anyone can do it. So take a moment to consider the impact disposable diapers have on our planet: 500 years in a landfill, or two hours of washing and drying...

School’s Out for Summer!

Now that school has let out and the kids are home for a while, the big question is…how do you keep your kids healthy, happy and busy this summer?

A lot of parents cringe when the kids begin uttering the words, “I’m bored” and it’s only the first week of summer! Beat the boredom blues this summer by trying some of the following activities!

Make it a movie day!
Many movie theaters across the country have either free or dollar matinees with G and PG rated movies for kids. This is an excellent way to beat not only the boredom blues, but also beat the heat!

Attend story time at your local library.
This is a great, free activity that your kids will love! Story time at the library is another inside, cool activity that is not only fun, but also educational. After story time, stick around the library and let your kids check-out some new books.

Wet and wild backyard fun!
Turn on the sprinkler and fill-up the plastic pool! Declare one day a Wet and Wild Backyard Fun Day! Make sure there is plenty of water, slip-n-slides, water balloons and water guns, plastic pools, sprinklers and sunscreen, and it is sure to be a day to remember!

Time to make a buck….
What kid doesn’t like having a lemonade stand? This is a great way to teach your kids some entrepreneurial skills, as well as provide a guaranteed day of fun! Start by giving the kids some “seed money” to start their business, and head to the grocery store. Have them help you pick out the supplies that are the most economical (all the while teaching them a lesson on saving money), and then it’s time to set up shop! Find a table, chairs, and make a big “Lemonade for Sale” sign. Once the lemonade stand is ready, begin making the lemonade and any baked goods that are going to be sold. Don't forget to man the lemonade stand with your kids, and you’ll both be having fun by the first sale of the day!

Nature’s calling your name!
Create a nature scavenger hunt for your kids. Make a list of 20 small things that are found in nature (and also in your neighborhood.) Some examples are: acorns, green leaves, sticks, pink flower petal, clover, and dandelions.) Then it’s time to explore! Have your kids explore the yard and other natural areas looking for these hidden treasures!

Making Mama Friends…Hey, You Come Here Often?

When you are a new mother, making “mama friends” can be difficult. Approaching other mothers can be as awkward as a first date! But once you get the hang of it, it does become easier. You may be wondering, “Where do I to meet these mothers?” Playgrounds, mommy and me classes (such as Little Gym, baby yoga and toddler swim classes), neighborhood playgroups and even waiting at the pediatrician’s office are great places to find potential mommy friends.

- How close in age are your two kids?
